Summary: A free iOS app turns any iDevice into a free, wireless security camera that records and streams video via the cloud and allows you watch it remotely in real-time.

I  have been looking into the array of spy cams and security security software available  and also of remote monitoring and home automation.

I have previously used ArcherFish Solo cameras but have since replaced them with DropCams – and I can't wait for Canary to go into production. I also dig Twine, Nest, Hue and innovative trackers like Tile, Foboand Trackdot.

Back to cameras for a second though. The problem with them is twofold, 1) the hardware can be expensive, and 2) there's a recurring cost for the service. But you're in luck, I've got the answer to both problems and you can have a wireless, network-enabled camera for nothing, at least while it's in beta. 

Manything is an innovative new service that turns your iOS 5+ device  (including that old iPod touch or iPhone collecting dust in a drawer) into a free WiFi video camera. The Manything iOS app (free, App Store) records and streams video via the cloud to your manything.com account and allows you watch it remotely in real-time, view recorded sessions and make and share clips.

Compatible devices include:

• iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S, 5
• iPod Touch 4th and 5th generation
• iPad 2,3,4
• iPad mini

If you have an unused iOS 5 device around, that solves problem 1 above. The second problem (the recurring fee for the service) is also covered because the Manything service is free during the beta period. After that, pricing for the storage is reasonable: 1GB is free, 3GB is $3 per month, 10GB is $8 per month, and 50GB is $15 per month. 

The service includes:

• Sound & movement detection
• Unlimited devices
• Clip sharing

A great use for an old iOS device that you might have laying around.

What is The Conversation Prism?

Developed in 2008 by Brian Solis, The Conversation Prism is a visual map of the social media landscape. It’s an ongoing study in digital ethnography that tracks dominant and promising social networks and organizes them by how they’re used in everyday life.

You can use the Conversation Prism poster in a number of ways…

1. Show your executive team that social media is not a fad and that it’s bigger than Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Pinterest
2. Share with your team to motivate them on new ways to think about social media
3. Celebrate that you’re on the map!
4. Study the landscape as you plan your next social media strategy

What’s New?

What’s different from 3.0? Well, version 4.0 brings about some of the most significant changes since the beginning. In this round, we moved away from the flower-like motif to simplify and focus the landscape. With all of the changes in social media, it would have been easier to expand the lens. Instead, we narrowed the view to focus on those that are on a path to mainstream understanding or acceptance. The result was the removal of 122 services while only adding 111. This introduces an opportunity for a series of industry or vertical-specific Prisms to be introduced so stay tuned.

Live Class

Today was the inaugural live class for the many excited Squared Online students. The lecture was held via a virtual classroom hosted by Adobe Connect.

This is a web conferencing platform for web meetings, eLearning, and webinars. A great tool for E Learning and works on virtually any device!

 I think this software has a lot of potential but suffice to say that day one wasn't without its technical teething problems. More on this software as the course progresses...

 One thing I will say about the virtual classroom is that I did find it hard to concentrate on what lecturers were saying whilst also reading all the comments in the chat box from fellow class members; but I guess this is a new style of learning and I will get used to it fairly quickly.

FINAL CUT PRO X

As part of the Squared Online course we  were asked to put together a 2 minute film about both our professional and social lives then finish by revealing something surprising.

This task a bit daunting at first but I decided it would be a good way learn some new video editing software so I have basically taken a crash course in using Final Cut Pro X and learnt as I went along. I also decided I wanted to use lots of transitions, layers and animation to make the short piece more interesting. ( I know how to make things easy for myself!)

I found Final Cut Pro X to be a fantastic piece of video editing software and was amazed as to its capabilities. It has hundreds of different filters, special effects and titles to choose from so I didn't even need to use an application like Adobe After Effects to do my titles.

...to say it took longer than expected  would be an understatement but it was all worth it in the end

Going Squared

I am very excited about securing a place  on 'Squared' online, a new digital training scheme led by Google, Home Learning College and IPA.
For the next six months I'll be immersing myself in the digital world and learning as much as I possibly can from industry experts and leaders. I'll be taking part in this journey along with other lucky graduates who were also selected for a place on this exciting new course.
